
The attackers drove up to the post at Kashgar and threw two grenades, which also wounded 16 members of the border patrol armed police division.
A militant Islamist group from the region recently claimed responsibility for bombings which killed five people.
The group promised attacks on the Olympic Games, due to start on Friday.
In a brief dispatch, China's state news agency said two attackers were arrested in a dump truck at the scene.
They had, it said, used the truck to break into the police post at about 0800 (0000 GMT) on Monday.
Xinjiang is home to the Muslim Uighur people. Uighur separatists have waged a low-level campaign against Chinese rule for decades.
