iPirates face jail time in customs frisk :

MUSIC fans might soon have their iPods searched by Customs officers at airport checks and face jail if a large amount of pirated music is found on them.

The push for the unprecedented searches of travellers' laptops and MP3 players has been revealed in a leaked discussion paper relating to a treaty being negotiated by the Federal Government.
It suggests criminal sanctions for infringements on a commercial scale.

Tom Cruise and Hanks top new power list :

Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks have topped the latest Ulmer Scale, which annually lists the 10 most bankable actors in Hollywood.
Former columnist James Ulmer, who compiles the hot list every year, insists the Toms have kept the likes of Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman and George Clooney off the top because film fans will pay to see them do just about anything.
Ulmer quips, "Tom Hanks could stand on his head and, in Swahili, quote the Koran (Islam's holy book), and someone would pay $100 million for that movie - ditto for Tom Cruise."
Ulmer insists his list is the most definitive way of tracking true star power because he spends 12 months looking at the form of over 1,000 stars.
He scores the stars by surveying dozens of leading film buyers and sellers worldwide.
Cruise tops the list, with Hanks coming in second and Jim Carrey third.

Cowell tops 'TV villain' survey :

American Idol judge Simon Cowell has been crowned the favourite reality TV villain in the United States in a poll of AOL website users.
Cowell's co-host Paula Abdul was named the worst reality TV judge, while their programme took the title of best reality show on US TV.
Dating show Flavor of Love was voted worst reality programme, as well as the show viewers would least like to go on.
More than 1.3 million people took part in the poll earlier this month.
American Idol also earned the "hottest hook-up" title for the romance between this year's winner, David Cook, and former contestant Kimberly Caldwell.
But despite being the most popular show, only 14% of voters thought they would want to take part in it.

LaBeouf held after road accident :

Indiana Jones star Shia LaBeouf has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after an accident in Hollywood.
LaBeouf's pick-up truck crashed into another vehicle in the early hours of Sunday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
Officers arrested him at the scene. He was later booked for a misdemeanour and taken for medical treatment.
Police said the 22-year-old was being treated for injuries to his hand and a
knee, as well as a minor head injury.
The incident took place at 0300 local time (1000 GMT).
"It was immediately apparent to officers responding on the scene that LaBeouf was intoxicated and he was subsequently placed under arrest," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt Scott Wolf told AP news agency.

Shrinking chips use novel recipe :

The chip industry's unrelenting quest to build smaller, faster microchips has taken another step forward.
Chip-maker Intel has launched a range of processors, known as Penryn, which will power the next generation of PCs.
The tiny chips contain a novel material and have features just 45 nanometres (billionths of a metre) wide.
The only PC processor in the line-up of 16 chips packs 820 million of the tiny switches into an area little bigger than a postage stamp.
"Had we used the same transistors that we used in our chips 15 to 20 years ago, the chip would be about the size of a two-storey building," said Bill Kircos of Intel.

Attacks begin on net address flaw :

Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.

'Blood oil' dripping from Nigeria :

Under cover of night dozens of barges queue up to dock at a jetty in a creek somewhere in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta.
Their holds are filled with stolen oil running from valves illegally installed into a pipeline.
Full, they chug downstream to meet around 10 larger ships near the oil export terminal in Bonny, Rivers State, where they disgorge their cargo.
By 0500, in the darkness before dawn, the ships uncouple from the barges and move out in a convoy to sea to rendezvous with a tanker which will spirit away the stolen oil, making it disappear into another cargo, bound for sale on the world market.
It is likely the tanker arrived partly loaded with guns, cocaine to be trafficked into Europe and cash, which they will use to pay for the oil.

LaBeouf booked for DUI after late-night wreck :

LOS ANGELES -- Shia LaBeouf was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Sunday after an early morning wreck in which the "Indiana Jones" star injured his hand and knee, authorities said.
LaBeouf was trying to make a left turn at a West Hollywood intersection around 3 a.m. when his pickup collided with another vehicle, rolling the truck over, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Wolf said.
"It was immediately apparent to officers responding on the scene that LaBeouf was intoxicated and he was subsequently placed under arrest," Wolf said.
Wolf said LaBeouf was booked then released for misdemeanor DUI. The 22-year-old actor was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was being treated for injuries to his left hand and a knee, as well as a minor head injury, Wolf said.
A woman passenger in LaBeouf's truck and the driver of the other vehicle were not seriously injured. Wolf did not know the identities of the woman or the other driver.

15 dead, 154 injured in Istanbul double bombing :

ISTANBUL: Two bombs exploded in Istanbul overnight, leaving at least 15 people dead and 154 wounded, officials said Monday, just hours before Turkey's top court begins deliberations on whether to ban the ruling party.

The city's governor Muammer Guler told that these bombs exploded in two different residential parts of the Gungoren neighbourhood on the city's European bank.The governor told that the first bomb created a small blast in a rubbish container while the second stronger explosion took place several minutes later a few metres (yards) away while a crowd gathered at the site of the first blast.He told that these blasts were not suicide attacks.Firefighters and emergency workers were dispatched to the scene and police established a security perimeter.Guler said that many people were wounded in nearby shops and all the wounded were taken to hospital through ambulances.
